eSIM & Kenya Network Glossary

4G / LTE

The mobile data standard that provides most of Kenya's everyday browsing, streaming, and navigation speeds.

5G

The newest mobile data standard, currently limited mostly to Nairobi and other major Kenyan cities.

Airtel Kenya

Kenya's second-largest mobile network, strong in cities but with materially less rural and national-park coverage than Safaricom.

APN (Access Point Name)

The network gateway settings a phone uses to connect to mobile data — usually automatic, but sometimes needs manual entry.

Carrier Lock (SIM Lock)

A restriction that ties a phone to a single carrier, which can prevent installing a different eSIM.

Coverage Map

A visual representation of where a carrier's network signal reaches, often shown by strength or generation (4G/5G/3G).

Data Roaming

The setting that allows a SIM or eSIM to connect to mobile data while outside its home network's coverage area.

Data Rollover

The (uncommon) ability to carry unused data over into a renewed or extended plan period.

Data Throttling

A deliberate reduction in connection speed, usually applied after a data plan's fair usage threshold is reached.

Data Top-Up

Adding extra data to an existing plan once you're close to or have exhausted your original allowance.

Dual eSIM

Support for two eSIM profiles active at once, without needing a physical SIM at all.

Dual SIM

A phone's ability to have two active SIM profiles at once — commonly one physical SIM and one eSIM.

eSIM

A digital SIM built into your phone that replaces a physical SIM card, activated by scanning a QR code instead of inserting plastic.

Fair Usage Policy (FUP)

The data threshold after which an "unlimited" plan's speed is reduced, even though access itself continues.

Global eSIM

A broad-coverage eSIM plan usable across many countries worldwide, generally at a premium price per GB.

Hotspot / Tethering

Sharing one phone's mobile data connection with other devices over Wi-Fi, Bluetooth, or a cable.

IMEI Number

A unique identifier assigned to every mobile phone, used to check eSIM compatibility and device status.

Kbps vs Mbps

Units of data speed — Mbps (megabits per second) is roughly 1,000x faster than Kbps (kilobits per second).

Local eSIM

An eSIM plan that connects directly to a destination country's own network, rather than routing through international roaming agreements.

Mobile Network Operator (MNO)

A company that owns and operates the physical mobile network infrastructure — towers, spectrum, and core network.

MVNO (Mobile Virtual Network Operator)

A company that sells mobile plans over another company's network infrastructure, without owning its own towers.

Network Band

A specific range of radio frequencies a mobile network uses to carry signal; a phone must support the right bands to get full-speed service.

Physical SIM (Nano-SIM)

The small removable plastic chip traditionally used to connect a phone to a mobile network.

QR Code Activation

The process of installing an eSIM by scanning a code, usually sent by email after purchase, instead of manually entering activation details.

Regional eSIM

A single eSIM plan that covers multiple countries within a region, such as East Africa.

Safaricom

Kenya's largest mobile network operator, with the country's most extensive coverage — especially in rural areas and national parks.

SIM Registration (eKYC)

Kenya's mandatory identity-verification process for activating a local SIM or mobile line, typically requiring passport details.

Telkom Kenya

Kenya's third mobile network operator, with the smallest footprint of the three and limited relevance for tourist eSIM plans.

Unlimited Data Plan

A data plan advertised without a hard data cap, though most enforce a fair usage policy after a threshold.

Validity Period

The number of days an eSIM data plan remains active, usually starting from first network connection rather than from purchase.
