Dual SIM Setup: Kenya eSIM + Home SIM Together (2026)

Running a Kenya eSIM alongside your home SIM — rather than switching entirely — is how most travelers use eSIM. Here's how to set it up so both lines do their job correctly.

The basic split

The standard setup: home SIM handles calls, SMS, and anything tied to your home number (banking OTPs, two-factor codes); Kenya eSIM handles mobile data only. This means you stay reachable on your usual number without paying your home carrier's roaming rates for data.

Setting default lines on iPhone

Go to Settings > Cellular. Under "Cellular Data", choose your Kenya eSIM. Under "Default Voice Line", keep your home SIM. You can also set per-line preferences for iMessage and FaceTime under Settings > Messages / FaceTime if you want those tied specifically to your home number.

Setting default lines on Android

Go to Settings > Network & internet > SIMs (or Connections > SIM Manager on Samsung). Set "Mobile data" to your Kenya eSIM and "Calls" / "SMS" to your home SIM. Most Android phones let you set these three independently.

What about WhatsApp?

WhatsApp ties to whichever number you registered it with — normally your home number — and works over data from either SIM once your Kenya eSIM is your active data line. You don't need to re-register WhatsApp for your trip; it simply uses whichever line is carrying data at the time.

A note on single-eSIM-slot phones

Some phones only support one active eSIM at a time, even if they support one eSIM plus one physical SIM. If your home line is already an eSIM rather than a physical SIM, check your phone's dual-SIM capacity before your trip — you may need to choose which line stays active rather than running both.
